Colic

When newborn babies have colic, they cry too much and too long for no known reason. Up to one-third of all babies may have some form of colic. It occurs in an equal number of boys and girls. Colic usually goes away when babies are three to four months old, but it can sometimes last longer. The cause of colic is still not known.

Here are some facts about colic.

The baby seems inconsolable, and no amount of cuddling seems to soothe them. The baby seems to be in agony.

In most cases colic begins within the first three weeks of life and can continue anywhere from twelve weeks to sixteen weeks.

The baby's belly may be hard and distended.

The legs are sometimes drawn up, arms are clenched tightly.

The main symptom is continuous crying for long periods of time. Although this crying can occur at any time, it usually worsens in the evening hours.

Episodes of crying that sometimes begin or end with a bowel movement or the passing of gas.

Colic is not a serious condition. Studies show that babies with colic continue to eat and gain weight normally, despite the hours of crying.
